Police Reforms

As part of a regional project entitled Civil Society and Police Reform in South Asia, the Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) with the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) conducted activities in the Maldives. The project which is funded by the European Union, is led by Friederich-Naumann-Foundation (FNF) and the CHRI, with the support of informal partners in Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Maldives. The activities of the project based in the Maldives aimed at promoting better policing in the Maldives with a series of activities planned over a period of one year. included increased monitoring and scrutiny of police performance, standards and service delivery including malpractice in the democratic context; conducting in-depth research on domestic and international legal standards on democratic policing and its applicability for Maldives; strengthening police oversight by sharing best practices and creating reference material; and mobilizing public demand for better policing.
