End Death Penalty, Protect Human Dignity

Efforts to advocate for the restoration of the unofficial moratorium on the death penalty in the Maldives began with the enforcement of the Regulation on Investigative Procedures and the Implementation of Offenses amounting to the Death Penalty, in 2014.

Supported by the British High Commission in Colombo, the project raised awareness on the legal gaps in the reintroduction of the death penalty in the Maldives, analysed procedural impropriety pertaining to cases of those on death row and evoked Islamic narrative on continuing the moratorium on the death penalty. A position paper on the analysis of the Maldivian criminal justice system in relation to the death penalty and flogging was compiled through this project. The paper highlights differing views of religious scholars on both issues; and contextualise rise of violent extremism and gang crime in relation to increasing calls for implementation of the death penalty.
